Valkyries Fall In Five Sets Against Mojo

Orlando comes up short in 2-3 (25-23, 17-25, 25-20, 20-25, 6-15) loss to San Diego

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Orlando Valkyries suffered a 2-3 (25-23, 17-25, 25-20, 20-25, 6-15) loss to the San Diego Mojo on Thursday night at Addition Financial Arena.

Outside hitter Jill Gillen led the Valkyries with 18 total points (17 kills and one block) in the contest. Full statistics for the match can be found here.

Set 1

The Valkyries took the first set 25-23. Orlando jumped out to an early 8-4 lead and San Diego tied the set at 11-11. The Mojo took the lead, and the Valkyries tied the set at 18-18. With San Diego leading 19-18, The Valkyries scored three straight points to lead 21-19. The Mojo tied the set at 22-22, but the Valkyries made the key plays to close out the set. Gillen and Mojo outside hitter Lindsay Vander Weide both had seven kills in the set.

Set 2

The Mojo pulled away and took the second set 25-17. With the score tied at 9-9, San Diego scored three consecutive points to take a 12-9 lead. The Mojo would build its lead to six points at 20-14. The Valkyries were not able to make a comeback. Vander Weide led both teams with eight kills in the set.

Set 3

Orlando pulled away and took the third set 25-20. The two teams were neck-and-neck to start the set. With the Valkyries leading 14-13, they went on 3-0 run to lead 17-13. Orlando shielded off San Diego and led by as much as five to close out the set. Gillen and Mojo outside hitter Temi Thomas-Ailara both had seven kills in the set.

Set 4

San Diego took the fourth set 25-20. The Mojo built a 13-9 lead to start the set. The Valkyries would get to within one but were not able to tie the set. Orlando outside hitter Courtney Schwan had five kills, but Vander Weide led both teams with six.

Set 5

The Mojo convincingly took the fifth set. The Valkyries got out to a 2-0 lead to start the set. With the set tied at 3-3, San Diego scored eight straight points to lead 11-3. Orlando was not able to make a comeback. Vander Weide led both teams with six kills in the set and finished the match with 32 total points (30 kills, one block and an ace).

The Valkyries are back in action on Saturday, May 11, against the Vegas Thrill at 7 p.m. at Addition Financial Arena.
