Valkyries Fall To Fury In Four Sets

Orlando lose 1-3 (25-22, 24-26, 12-25, 15-25) to Columbus

The Orlando Valkyries suffered a 1-3 (25-22, 24-26, 12-25, 15-25) loss to the Columbus Fury on Friday night at Nationwide Arena.

Outside hitter Adora Anae led the Valkyries with 18 total points (15 kills and three blocks) in the contest. Full statistics for the match can be found here.

Set 1

The Valkyries took a tightly contested first set 25-22. The two teams traded points and neither team scored more than three points in a row. With the score tied at 19-19, the Valkyries scored two consecutive points to lead 21-19. Orlando made the necessary plays to close out the set. Columbus opposite hitter Kendall Kipp led both teams with eight kills on 21 attacks.

Set 2

The Fury narrowly took the second set 26-24. After scoring six consecutive points, Columbus had an early 7-2 lead. The Valkyries would go on a 6-1 run to tie the set at 8-8. Orlando took the lead at 10-9 and Columbus did not regain the lead until 17-16. To close the set, the Fury led 24-21, but Orlando scored three straight points to tie the set at 24-24. Columbus had a crucial kill and then took the set after a hitting error by the Valkyries. Anae led both teams with seven kills in the set.

Set 3

Columbus dominated and took the third set 25-12. The Fury scored the set’s first three points and jumped out to a 5-1 lead. With the score at 6-3, Columbus went on a 10-1 run to lead 16-4. And the Fury never looked back, leading by as much as 13 in the one-sided set. Columbus outside hitter Megan Courtney Lush led both teams with five kills in the set.

Set 4

The Fury took the fourth set 25-15 to win the match. Columbus had an early 6-3 lead and then went on a 6-1 run. The Fury, again, dominated the remainder of the set and led by as much as 10 points. Columbus outside hitter Reagan Cooper had seven kills to lead both teams in the set.

The Valkyries (7-13) are back in action on Monday, April 29, against the San Diego Mojo at 10 p.m. at Viejas Arena.
