Valkyries’ Georgia Murphy records season-high 32 digs

Orlando Valkyries libero Geogia Murphy recorded a season-high 32 digs on Monday night against the San Diego Mojo.

The impressive stat is on par with the most digs in a match this inaugural season of the Pro Volleyball Federation.

“That was really exciting to hear,” Murphy said. “But I think at the end of the day I’m just playing volleyball and doing what I’m supposed to do and helping my team in any way.”

Murphy, a rookie out of the University of Oregon, has started every match this season for Orlando. Her previous high in digs was 21 in the Valkyries’ season-opener against the Atlanta Vibe in late January.

“I think it’s just a testament to the work that she’s put in,” said Orlando head coach Amy Pauly. “From the beginning when she came in for training camp, we kind of recognized she could be a really special player. But she needed to increase her range and pick up the speed of the game a little bit. And she’s done that.

“She’s always in the gym; getting extra reps. She knows what she needs to work on. I think last night, she finally was like, ‘You know what I can be super impactful in a match and I can do more and let me show you I can do that.’”

Murphy’s 187 digs this season is currently tied for the most digs in the league with Vegas Thrill’s Kylie Murr.

“I expect (Murphy) to keep getting better,” Pauly said. “I expect her to become one of those liberos where people are like, ‘Don’t hit the ball in that direction.’ And so maybe her dig numbers will go down because people are avoiding her. But I think she’s got a great shot to be long-term in this league.”
