Valkyries Fall In Neck-And-Neck Battle With Fury

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Orlando Valkyries came up just short in a 2-3 (17-25, 25-21, 28-30, 25-21, 15-17) loss Sunday at Addition Financial Arena.

Outside hitter Adora Anae led the Valkyries with 27 total points (22 kills, three blocks and two aces) in the contest. Full statistics for the match can be found here.

Set 1

The Fury decisively took the first set 25-17. Columbus got the upper hand early, going on a 6-0 run to lead 9-2. The Valkyries never quite recovered, with the Fury leading by as much as eight in the set. Anae had three kills in the set.

Set 2

The Valkyries got back on track and took the second set 25-21. The two teams traded points to start the set and then Orlando gained a two-point advantage. The Valkyries would push its lead to four to close out the set. Middle blocker Kaz Brown and Anae both had four kills for the Valkyries in the set.

Set 3

In set three, Columbus edged out the Valkyries 30-28. The Fury built a three-point lead at 13-10, which turned into a four-point lead at 18-14. The Valkyries would crawl its way back, tying the set at 21-21 on a kill by Brown. Orlando took the lead at 23-22 and then the two teams traded points until the final set point. Anae had six kills, but was outdueled by Columbus’ Reagan Cooper, who had 11 kills in the set.

Set 4

Orlando took the fourth set 25-21. The Valkyries built an early 7-4 lead, and Columbus scored three straight points to tie the set at 7-7. However, Orlando would score four straight points to lead 11-7. With the Valkyries leading 15-12, the team scored four straight points to lead 19-12 — its biggest lead of the set. The Fury would go on a 7-2 run to bring the set to within two at 21-19. But Orlando did not waver and finished the set strong. Anae led both teams with eight kills in the set.

Set 5

In the fifth set, Columbus overcame a five-point deficit to win the set 17-15. With the score at 4-3, Orlando scored four straight points to lead 8-3. However, Fury went on a 5-0 run to tie the set at 8-8. From then the teams traded points and Columbus pulled out the win. Cooper had four kills in the set and finished the match with 31 points (29 kills, one ace and one block).
