Pro Volleyball 101

(as of January 2024)

A Few Pro Volleyball Federation Rules Were Adopted From The FIVB:

  • Eight substitutions are permitted (instead of six for FIVB & 15 in NCAA)
  • Two different liberos can enter in the same set
  • A 15-second serving clock between rallies will be utilized. The protocol remains at eight seconds after the whistle to serve, if the clock runs out a horn will sound from the scorer’s table (assistant scorer runs the clock and the visual scoreboard)

Pro Volleyball Federation Challenge System:

  • Pro Volleyball Federation incorporates a comprehensive challenge system for the sports. Details our outlines in the rules manual available to each team.

Two Challenges per team per set – if the challenge is won, the team keeps that challenge

  • A coach can challenge in the middle of a rally by using a button on a provided electronic tablet. A horn will sound and stop the play for a brief time period
  • Teams may also challenge at the end of the rally
  • The challenge referee will be located off site and will make the ruling and send it back to the referees through their headsets and tablets
  • A total of 22 high-definition cameras will be placed around the facility to help with challenges
  • Bolt6 will be used to call lines – any ball hitting within a foot of the line will be flashed up on the video board and on the referee tablets

Additional Things To Know…

  • Each team plays 12 matches at home and 12 matches on the road in 2024
  • Teams will switch courts only after the second set (no other switches including the fifth set)
  • Coaches will use tablets on their bench to call timeouts, substitutions and request a challenge
  • The first referee (on the stand) is on the same side as the team benches
  • Due to the use of high technology, there are no line judges
  • Scorer and assistant’s scorer will keep score electronically (e-score)
  • VolleyStation is the software being used to track scoring, subs, stats, video and challenges
  • Teams will have a 14-player roster with no more than two players being natives of international countries
  • A four-team championship will take place in mid-May with a $1 million prize money for the winning team
